Taking care of your mattress is an important part of ensuring a good night’s sleep. Cleaning it regularly prevents harmful allergens such as dust mites and mold from growing, which can cause health problems. Knowing how to properly care for your mattress maximizes its life and fosters better sleep. Here are our top tips:
1. Rotate it
Rotating a mattress every three months helps to keep the mattress even all over. When installing a new mattress, it’s recommended to rotate it every two weeks during the first few months, and then move to rotating every three months.
2. Vacuum your mattress and box spring
Vacuuming a mattress may sound a little odd, but it helps get rid of dust mites and allergens. Just lightly use the upholstery
attachment on the vacuum and clean the top and sides of the mattress. The same technique can be done with the box spring. For further protection against allergens, considers investing in a quality mattress protector.
3. Invest in good support
Many people don’t realize how important it is to make sure the mattress and bed frame work well together. Not only is it more comfortable to sleep on when they match, but it keeps the mattress in good shape a lot longer.
4. Keep the bedroom cool
Dust mites and mold thrive in a warm, humid room. Even if the weather is a little chilly out, it’s important to keep the bedroom a little cooler than the rest of the house to prevent mold and mites.
5. Keep your mattress clean
Washing sheets and pillow cases every week and comforters and blankets every month to six weeks helps to keep the mattress clean. All sheets and pillowcases should be washed in accordance to the tag with a quality detergent. If you notice any odors on your mattress when changing the sheets, sprinkle some baking soda over the smelly spots and let it sit for 20 minutes. When the 20 minutes is up, vacuum the mattress as normal.
6. Avoid letting children jump on the bed
While it may sound like fun at the time, jumping on the bed can be damaging to your mattress. It can break the springs and fibers in the mattress, making the bed more uncomfortable to sleep on.
7. Know when it’s time for a new mattress
Even with the best care, the average lifespan of a mattress is only 8-10 years. If you start to notice any sagging or are waking up with any aches and pains, it may be time to start shopping for a new mattress.
